How to resize an image

Dimensions, not file size

This tool is about pixels. It answers “make this 1080 by 1080” — not “make this fit under two megabytes”. Fewer pixels does usually mean a smaller file, but if you have a size limit to meet, compressing gives you far more control. The two tools sit next to each other in the related list below.

Keeping proportions

Width and height are linked by default, so setting one adjusts the other and your photo keeps its shape. This is what you want almost every time.

Unlocking the link lets you force exact dimensions, which will stretch or squash the image. Fill mode is usually the better answer when something must be an exact size: it covers the dimensions completely and crops the overflow rather than distorting what is there.

Why enlarging does not work

Scaling up cannot invent detail that the camera never captured. A 400-pixel image stretched to 2000 pixels is the same information spread over more pixels, which looks soft or blocky. Enlarging is therefore off unless you deliberately turn it on.

Quality and privacy

Downscaling is done in stages rather than in one jump, which keeps edges and text crisp instead of producing the mushy result a single large reduction gives. The output keeps the format it came in as.

As with every tool here, the image never leaves your device, and the EXIF block holding GPS coordinates and camera details is not carried into the resized copy.

Will resizing stretch my photo?

Not unless you ask it to. Width and height are linked by default, so setting one adjusts the other to keep the original proportions. Unlocking them allows exact dimensions at the cost of distortion.

Can I make an image larger?

Enlarging is off by default because it cannot add detail that is not in the original. A small image scaled up looks soft or blocky no matter what tool is used.

What is the difference between fit and fill?

Fit puts the whole image inside the dimensions you gave, so it may end up smaller in one direction. Fill covers those dimensions completely and crops whatever falls outside.

Does resizing make the file smaller too?

Usually yes, as a side effect of having fewer pixels. If the goal is a specific file size rather than specific dimensions, use the compression tool instead.
