Savings goal calculator
What to put aside each month to hit a target
Files are processed on your device and are never sent to a server.
How to use this calculator
Say what you are saving for, how much it costs, and when you need it. The calculator works out what you have to put aside each month to get there, taking into account anything you have already saved and any interest you expect to earn.
If the monthly figure is more than you can manage, change what you know and let it solve for something else — a later date, a smaller target, or a different starting amount. That is the useful part: seeing what actually moves the number.
Start earlier rather than save harder
Two things reach a target: the amount you put in and the time it has to grow. Time is almost always the cheaper of the two. Pushing a deadline out by a year usually reduces the monthly figure by more than people expect, and starting a year earlier does the same.
Try it both ways before deciding the goal is out of reach. The difference between a four-year and a five-year deadline is often the difference between an uncomfortable figure and a manageable one.
What the target will actually be worth
A deposit target set six years out is not six years’ worth of the same thing. Prices move, and the sum that buys a car or covers a down payment today will not cover the same thing later.
The inflation option shows the target in today’s money alongside the nominal figure. It does not change what you need to save — it changes how you judge whether the target is the right size.
What this page will not do
It calculates and nothing more. There is no product being recommended, no account being opened, and no suggestion that any particular rate of return is available or likely. The interest rate is a number you supply, and the result is only as realistic as it is.
Why it runs in your browser
What you are saving for, and how far along you are, stay on your own device. The page sends nothing anywhere, so there is no account to create, nothing stored on a server, and nothing to delete afterwards.
Can I work backwards from what I can afford?
Yes. Enter the amount you can put aside each month and the calculator tells you when the target is reached instead. You can solve for whichever part you do not know — the monthly amount, the time, the starting sum, or the rate.
What if the calculator says I need a very high interest rate?
Then the goal is not reachable on that timescale with those contributions. The figure is arithmetic, not a suggestion that such a rate exists — no ordinary savings account pays it. Change the amount, the deadline or the target instead.
Why does the result mention today's money?
Because a target set years out is worth less by the time you reach it. Turning on the inflation option shows what your target would be worth in today's money, which is usually a more useful way to judge whether the number is the right one.
Are my figures sent anywhere?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser and nothing is uploaded, so the page still works with the internet disconnected once it has loaded.
